College Essay Dos & Donts
College Essay Dos & Donâts My fascination with marine life led me to volunteer as an exhibit interpreter for the Aquarium of the Pacific, where I share my love for the ocean. Most of my time is spent rescuing animals from small children and, in turn, keeping small children from drowning in the tanks. These are the moments I hold onto, the ones that define who I am, and who I want to be. For me, time isnât just seconds ticking by on a clock, itâs how I measure what matters. â The thought screams through my mind as I carry a sobbing girl on my back across campus in search of an ice pack and ankle wrap. She had just fallen while performing, and I could relate to the pain and fear in her eyes. The chaos of the show becomes distant, and I devote my time to bringing her relief, no matter how long it may take. The process of achieving this new mindset came through the cultivation of relationships. I became fascinated by the new perspectives each person in my life could offer if I really took the time to connect. People interpret situations differently due to their own cultural contexts, so I had to learn to pay more attention to detail to understand every point of view. I took on the state of what I like to call collaborative independence, and to my delight, I was elected to StuGo after my third year of trying. Despite knowing how to execute these very particular tasks, I currently fail to understand how to change a tire, how to do my taxes efficiently, or how to obtain a good insurance policy. I would give a weekly report on new technology and we would have hour-long conversations about the various uses a blacker material could have. I began spending more time in our garage, carefully constructing planes from sheets of foam. I found purpose balancing the fuselage or leveling the ailerons to precisely 90 degrees. Since then, Iâve launched a sports medicine program to provide care to the 500-person choir program. The heavy scuba gear jerks me under the icy water, and exhilaration washes over me. Lost in the meditative rolling effect of the tide and the hum of the vast ocean, I feel present. I dive deeper to inspect a vibrant community of creatures, and we float together, carefree and synchronized. Saudi Arabia in the 2000s wasnât the most ideal place to grow up. I was always scared of terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda. My school was part of the US Consulate in Dhahran, and when I was in the 8th grade it was threatened by ISIS. Violence has always surrounded me and haunted me. My parents decided to start anew, took some time apart, then got back together. My mom started to pick me up from activities on time and my dad and I bonded more, watching Warriors and 49ers games. The worst time came when my parents tried to fix their relationship. Enduring the stress of her restaurant, my father, and her mistakes, my mom attempted to end her life. I loved cutting new parts and assembling them perfectly. But at times I still had to emotionally support my mom to avoid sudden India trips, or put my siblings to bed if my parents werenât home at night. Over time, I found it difficult being my familyâs glue. I wanted back the family I had before the restaurant--the one that ate Luchi Mongsho together every Sunday night. Since the admissions committee is reading hundreds of essays, itâs your job to move them, make them laugh, and force them to realize that they need you at their institution. Your essay should exemplify the manner in which you think. Instead of basing your character off of grades and standardized test scores, the essay provides the reader with a sense of your personality and views from your perspective. Writing a good college essay means being honest about your feelings and experiences even when they aren't entirely positive. A lot of students panic about finding a unique topic, and certainly writing about something unusual like a successful dating app you developed with your friends or your time working as a mall Santa can't hurt you. Most colleges are pretty diverse, with students from a wide range of backgrounds. Many applicants attempt to do too much with their essays and then struggle to edit them down to 650 words. Realize the purpose of the personal statement is not to tell your life story or to give an exhaustive overview of all of your accomplishments. Let your list of extracurricular activities, academic record, letters of recommendation, and supplemental essays and materials show your range of accomplishments. Colleges want to know if you struggled with a serious issue that affected your high school record, so make sure to indicate any relevant circumstances on your application. The most important role of the essay is to give admissions committees a sense of your personality and what kind of addition you'd be to their school's community. These kinds of qualities will have a profound impact on your college experience, but they're hard to determine based on a high school transcript. In the college essay, you need to contextualize your examples for the reader. If you are writing a good complex essay, even your topic sentence will require more explanation than just one sentence. Many students want to call it a day after writing a first draft, but editing is a key part of writing a truly great essay. To be clear, editing doesn't mean just making a few minor wording tweaks and cleaning up typos; it means reading your essay carefully and objectively and thinking about how you could improve it. For example, at The University of Tampa, the question, âHow do you feel about the month of February? â rarely results in a boring application essay and can go in numerous directions. In fact, many schools have cool, offbeat essay questions that really provide you with the opportunity to present the admissions committee with new insight as to who you are.

Anyone Else Just Procrastinating Their College Essay Rn?
Anyone Else Just Procrastinating Their College Essay Rn? The earlier you can accomplish this, the earlier you can start on the rest of the application work. Do online research, visit campuses if possible, check out schools on CampusReel, attend college fairs, talk to alumni, etc. This is about you figuring out where it is you can academically flourish. Sure, any student can list achievements, but thatâs not what the admissions gurus are looking for in an essay. Most colleges and universities look for five traits in a student essay. But the personal essay, doesnât have to be that terrifying a beast if your student holds the keys to writing one that will stand out from all of the rest. Also, I know that procrastination and writing fatigue are real obstacles in this process. You guys arenât essay robots able to churn out quality drafts on a strict schedule. I caught that 10-inch fryling five years ago on Fall Creek using a $5 fly rod given to me by my neighbor Gil. The creek is spectacular as it cascades down the 150-foot drop of Ithaca Falls. This timeline wasnât meant to be followed exactly. But that doesnât mean that setting goals and putting pressure on yourself early on isnât going to help you get the ball rolling. Trust me, a little work now will go a long way towards boosting your confidence and overall preparedness throughout this process. If youâre getting any help from counselors or teachers for editing your essays, keep in mind that many of them will stop checking their emails once Christmas break starts. Only 100-feet further, however, it runs past a decrepit gun factory and underneath a graffitied bridge before flowing adjacent to my high school and out to Cayuga Lake. Aside from the falls, the creek is largely overlooked. Nearly all of the high school students I know who cross that bridge daily do so with no thought of the creek below. This emphasis on diversity can also be found in the variety of specialized departments found at State University. On top of its growing cultural and ethnic diversity, State University is becoming a master at creating a niche for every student. The Kidâs Book of Fishing was replaced by Norman MacLeanâs A River Runs Through It. Soon Ernest Hemingwayâs essays found their place next to Trout Unlimited magazines by my bed. Although you donât have to make final decisions for your college list yet, you want to have a number of schools that youâre stoked to apply to and will stay on your college list. There is not a time I play my clarinet or guitar, step up to a microphone to sing, or take a bow after a performance that I do not wonder what my donor would think of me. I am still searching for a connection to him through performing and music. I am thankful his personal essay swayed my mother to choose him as my donor, and that his writing compelled me to discover and pursue all of my passions in the classroom and on the stage. Make sure to get things into them ahead of time and be respectful of their time. If you didnât get your drafts to them in due time to give feedback, donât get upset if they tell you that they wonât sacrifice their vacation to help you. Like I mentioned before, continue to look for opportunities to reuse drafts for other schools. If youâre really hesitant to work on essays because official updated prompts for your schools havenât come out yet, then working on the UC essays can be a safe alternative. The UCs rarely change the prompts and even if they did change them, the changes would probably be announced by now. Just like it says, some students are still not satisfied by what theyâve come up with, but think theyâre really close to finding the right topic. Remember, your main essay is the only essay that you put THIS much work into because of how important it is. In order to give an essay a proper chance in the editing process, it needs to be crafted to the vision that you have for it. You should be reaching critical mass around this time of having an essay draft for just about any prompt that a school will give you. Youâll just have to adjust word counts or the focus of the learning point a little bit.

Too much feedback will give you a lot of contradicting opinions while too little feedback could miss some glaring problems if that person isnât experienced in college essay writing. A good number of people to get feedback from is about three or four different people. Like other essays, college essays follow the traditional style of writing pattern. A college essay is a part of a college admission application. Along with standardized tests and transcripts, application college essays are also a part of many college applications. An outline is a must to write any essay or assignment. Here are the initial steps to start your college essay. Most students are in the middle of AP exams throughout this month, so they usually donât have time to do much more than this. Every college applicant will have varying essay workloads, depending on their college list. If youâre serious about getting into a school like Stanford, those essays will also have to be quite excellent. For less competitive schools, there might not even be any supplemental essays to write. Admission officers read plenty of application essays and know the difference between a studentâs original story and a recycled academic essay, orâ"worseâ"a piece written by your mom or dad or even plagiarized. Bring something new to the table, not just what you think they want to hear. Students with high aspirations for top colleges should be prepared to write A LOT of essays. Schools like Stanford require answers to 6 short answer questions , an extracurricular essay , and 3 short essay questions . Although they are all quite short, thatâs 10 questions to answer in a thoughtful, efficient manner. These should be people who know you well and have experience with personal writing. Unused essays can easily be used for other essay prompts down the line.
Can I Reuse The Same Essay On A Different Application?
Can I Reuse The Same Essay On A Different Application? For the first time, it looks past the silver fence of the cage and notices an unkempt sweep of colossal brown and green grasses opposite its impeccably crafted surroundings. Cautiously, it inches closer to the barrier, farther from the unbelievable perfection of the farm, and discovers a wide sea of black gravel. I analyze why I think this essay works in The Complete Guide, Session 6. Frozen in disbelief, the chicken tries to make sense of her harsh words. Like rock-paper-scissors, we tend to accept something not because itâs true, but because itâs the convenient route to getting things accomplished. We accept incomplete narratives when they serve us well, overlooking their logical gaps. Other times, we exaggerate even the smallest defects and uncertainties in narratives we donât want to deal with. In a world where we know very little about the nature of âTruth,â itâs very easyâ"and temptingâ"to construct stories around truth claims that unfairly legitimize or delegitimize the games we play. What if you were to take the negative approach to answer the prompt? Maybe you can tell what your hopes are by writing what you do not hope for. A cold December wind wafts a strange infusion of ramen and leftover pizza. On the wall in the far back, a Korean flag hangs besides a Led Zeppelin poster. As with rock-paper-scissors, we often cut our narratives short to make the games we play easier, ignoring the intricate assumptions that keep the game running smoothly. If you are on a date, you would naturally want to be smart, funny, nice, caring, unique, not boring. You also want to have an opinion, not step back like an unthinking geek. Write your essay as though you would be a great second date. Place the reader in the middle of something happening or in the middle of a conversation. I have learned to accept my âambiguityâ as âdiversity,â as a third-culture student embracing both identities in this diverse community that I am blessed to be a part of. I look around my room, dimly lit by an orange light. On a desk in the left corner, a framed picture of an Asian family is beaming their smiles, buried among US history textbooks and The Great Gatsby. A Korean ballad streams from a pair of tiny computer speakers. Pamphlets of American colleges are scattered about on the floor. That means you should write with voice, that is, you need to write with your own personality. Honesty, humor, talking the way you talk, showing the way you think, all help to create voice. Sometimes even a single word that stands as a paragraph can make the reader wonder and read on. Put the reader in medias res, that is, in the middle of things. If you look at things a little differently from others you stand out. In answering an essay prompt, you need not always do it the most normal way. If there are a lot of mistakes in your essay, it can not be pretty. Make sure you have spelled everything correctly. âAll the food, the nice soft hay, the flawless red barn--maybe all of this isnât worth giving up. She just wants to protect me from losing it all.â The chicken replays the incident again. A fissure in the chickenâs unawareness, a plan begins to hatch. The chicken knows it must escape; it has to get to the other side. The chicken--confused, betrayed, disturbed--slowly lifts its eyes from the now empty ground.

College Essay Help
College Essay Help These steps will help you develop a list of specific qualities that are unique to the school. Essay writingis an important part of the college application process. Using the Common Application, you will have to write one major essay, and possibly write a series of smaller essays for each school on their Supplement Forms . Don't too closely follow the pattern of essays you find on the internet or in essay books. Use these for inspiration but start with a completely blank page when you compose your own. I haven't read a lot of good essays in those books anyway. The essays that make up The Common Application & supplements are not just typical pieces of writing, nor are they just another step in the application process. College essays are an uncommon genre that must catch the attention of admissions officers and illuminate studentsâ intellect, personality, and potential. Your college counselors are there to help, but they canât if you donât ask or wait until the last minute to seek guidance and feedback. Make a plan to meet with your college counselor and go over your college list and essays, and ask for feedback on your writing. Your college counselor can provide valuable insight into how to improve your college application essays, so seek feedback on your drafts as soon as possible. Your IvySelect college counselor will help you tie together the various pieces of your application in both the academic and extracurricular contexts. Through our strategic vision, you will understand how your school-based and summer activities, as well as your personal and family experiences tie together to showcase your life themes. Many of the prompts on the Common Application are left open-ended for a reason. They serve as starting points while giving you freedom to show colleges who you are. A common mistake that students make while writing their essays is focusing completely on an event that took place. While what occurred is important, you need to demonstrate how it affected you and how you felt. Weâll help you demonstrate your vision throughout your application and your essays, so that, in admissions speak, there will be the proper âresonanceâ across all of your college admissions documents. When students lack professional college admissions guidance, they often will write essays that they think admissions officers want. They may envision a professorial old man sporting a bow tie and dowdy sports jacket as their gatekeeper. Though a few admissions officers may fit that profile, most AOâs do not belong to that demographic. School-based counselors have a lot of students to advise and are very busy, so seek guidance early and often. While itâs important to put considerable effort into all college application components, essays are often the finishing touch and should be treated with great care and consideration. Admissions officers want to see how you think and how youâve grown. The essay is the only place on your application to truly take them into your mind. You should read a college guide book, methodically review the website, and hopefully, if at all possible, visit the school. Additionally, you might email an admissions counselor at the school with some questions or speak to a current student or alum. (If you donât know anyone affiliated with the school, try asking your guidance counselor if there are former students from your high school who attend or attended X college.) Peruse a course catalog. Our Senior Counselors have years of experience guiding students in writing essays that make admissions officers take notice. Our veteran admissions counselors are frequently asked to share expert advice about writing compelling college essays. They aren't so polished and smooth that they read like the work of a pro. After years of practice reading essays the admissions officers and faculty who make admission decisions are quite astute in picking out the student voice. We asked our admissions counselors to share their perspectives on why the college essay matters and what matters most. We trust youâll find this information useful as you prepare your college applications. Feel free to contact our admissions staff with additional questions.

How Long Should A College Essay Be?
How Long Should A College Essay Be? We still screamed our favorite Taylor Swift songs as if there was no tomorrow. Nothing could get in between the love we had for each other, even our vehemently opposing opinions. Patience, collaboration, and determination are all needed when climbing a wall, like in any field of research. I no longer say I canât do something, instead approaching challenges with the utmost confidence. If one plan falls short, I reassess and approach the wall from another angle. The best things about climbing is that there is no clear-cut way to climb a wall, and that there is always a new challenge. My climbing partners say that I take the most unorthodox routes when climbing, but ironically theyâre the most natural and comfortable paths for me. I get lost in the walls and climb for hours, as time becomes irrelevant. Sometimes, pure adrenaline rushes through my body, making me want to bang my hands on the table out of complete anger towards an opinion. I have learned, though, that suppressing my emotional side during a time of disagreement and instead responding with calmness gets my point across more effectively. When that irritation begins to overtake my ability to concentrate on another personâs outlook, I always try to draw from my experiences of living both in the South and in the West. They are surrounded by different cultures and experiences. I donât necessarily have to find validity in everyoneâs viewpoints to at least listen to their reasoning. I extract small pieces of their perspectives in order to enhance my own. If I completely disagree with their opinions, I use their counterargument to articulate a more potent version of my position. The value in telling my story is just as important as hearing another. I think of nothing else but reaching the last hold and forget all of my worries. Even when my friends beg to go home from fatigue, I insist on attempting another route. I donât feel Iâve had a sufficient climbing session until my forearms are pulsing and the skin on my fingertips are raw. At first, I was an impatient climber who would try and solve the wall before me, making split-second decisions. I cherish being on a soccer team, where the bond between my teammates and me is essential for achieving success. Appreciating uniqueness and connecting to different characters augments my own maturity and depth. Despite our differences, Emily and I have a healthy relationship in which we are able to learn from one another; the acknowledgement of our individual value allows us to avoid bitterness. I strive to continue improving my ability to be comfortable with disagreement in order to learn more from my peers. I love group projects in school, where ideas and creativity flow between people. I adore the end of a cross country race when all the girls from different schools hug and laugh with one another. âThese people are just confused,â Emily whispered to me as she stared out the car window at the gay couples walking down the rainbow streets of the Castro. I was utterly offended by her statement, but I replied calmly, âLet people be who they are.â Emily and I grew up in Texas together as inseparable friends. For twelve years that was our beautiful home, and we enjoyed every moment together. Last summer, Emily visited my new home of five years, San Francisco, for the first time. We still laughed until our faces turned tomato red. However, this strategy rapidly tired me out after beginning to climb. Clearly, this method wasnât going to get the job done; I had to change my mindset. Now, when I approach a wall, I first draw the problem out in my mind, using my hands to examine the holds. Like a game of chess, I lay out an intricate plan of attack. I am comfortable making decisions, even when I donât know what the outcome may be. Through this life-changing sport I have strengthened not only my body but also my mind, learning the beauty of problem solving. I may not always send up agreeing with Emily, or other people I care about, but I should at least try to understand a different perspective. Only then can I create a bridge that connects two different ideas, allowing for a more harmonious world. So, I try to listen with an open mind, even when that feels extremely difficult.

Can I Reuse The Same Essay On A Different Application?
Can I Reuse The Same Essay On A Different Application? She laughs about stateside cousins freaking out over bathtub centipedes, when she has experienced a botfly larva growing under her skin. Soon she has enough to construct an essay that shows a completely different side of her. She may even send this essay to any of her colleges that accept additional materials. Rachelâs sense of humor is her signature; like her favorite character Yossarian, she sees absurdity in everything. Could she tweak some of her Catch-22 essay to write about humor under pressure? Sheâd have to use examples that show this trait, rather than simply insist sheâs funny, which isnât effective. Your essay is an invitation to tell a personal story that allows the reader to infer important personal characteristics about you based on the anecdotes and experiences you shared. A good essay provides readers with a clear understanding of how your experiences have shaped your view of communities and your potential to have an impact on others. The essay is NOT an annotated resume nor an opportunity to restate the materials already noted on the important âActivitiesâ section of the Common and Coalition Application. cram as many accomplishments as possible into your essay in order to impress admissions officers. Your next step is to think about particular moments when you exhibited those traits. This approach lays the foundation for developing stories to use in both your personal statement and supplemental essays. She casts her mind back to 2016, when her family ran out of toilet paper in a country with continual shortages, and how she and her sister giggled while gathering gingko leaves as a possible substitute. The Common Application has announced that the Core College Essay-or Personal Statement prompts for the college admissions season will be the same for the fourth year in a row. This essay is all about demonstrating that you are a good fit for the college and will also contribute to the college inside and outside of the classroom. In about 10 days, Rachel is done with her main essay. Because she was enthusiastic about the topic and created a structure before starting to write, it wasnât as difficult as sheâd anticipated. She will start the essay with a snapshot of a childrenâs Halloween party that she and other embassy teens organized, then discuss being a volunteer monitor for an online local TCK community. Sheâll end with her plan to forge new bonds with other international kids, mentioning specific clubs or houses at each university. Barnard wants 250 words, and sheâll expand the essay for Michigan. Organize your thesis along with these anecdotes, in bullet-point format, into a clear beginning, middle, and end. Don't forget about the content quality being concentrated on the length. Here you will get high-quality essay writing help. Check each sentence you write to make sure it is meaningful. Read your paper to parents or friends to see whether your piece of writing sounds powerful. Letâs discuss the differences and how to tackle your essay. Even at one-essay only colleges, there will often be a supplemental essay to receive consideration for Honors programs and/or academic scholarships. Think about why an admissions official would ask this and what they are hoping to learn about you that makes you a good fit for their institution. Next, pair personal stories or experiences that illustrate your answers. Get a jump start on a critical part of the college application process. While considering your anecdotes, focus on specific details and really flesh out the scene. You might not have enough space to tell your entire life story, but if you focus on a couple of examples, it can make your essay vivid and make it come to life. Take the prompt of each essay and break down its parts. Because Rachel is still undecided about her major, she will also mention a few classes sheâs excited about in subjects other than history. But first, she needs to brainstorm topics for the supplemental essays to make sure no topics overlap. Rachel, a devoted dog-lover, has volunteered at rescue organizations in three different countries, andâ"surprise, surpriseâ"the family has ended up adopting three dogs. Rachel could write the story of adopting each dog and how important volunteering was to her, while throwing in colorful details that illustrate her familiarity with each country. Perhaps most important, this is an essay Rachel canât wait to write.

College Essay And Application Help In Austin, Texas
College Essay And Application Help In Austin, Texas At heart, I am still reserved , but in finding my voice, I found a strength I could only dream of when I stood in silence so many years ago. Scanning the school club packet, I searched for my place. But then, I sat in on a debate team practice and was instantly hooked. I began to voice my opinions as opposed to keeping my ideas to myself. As my debate rank increased from the triple to single-digits, so too did my standing at school. I began interacting with my teachers more and leading my peers in clubs. In discussions, I put forward my ideas with every bit as much conviction as my classmates. When seniors began to ask me for advice and teachers recruited me to teach underclassmen, I discovered not only that I had been heard, but that others wanted to listen. I found I could finally look other people in the eyes when I talked to them without feeling embarrassed. My posture straightened and I stopped fidgeting around strangers. Either way, there is so much to be gained from digging deep in this process and seeing what we can discover together. This process can be affirming, therapeutic, and in some cases life-changingâ"and I wouldnât have dedicated the last 10 years of my life to this practice if it werenât so. All good stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end, so shape your story so that it has an introduction, body, and conclusion. Following this natural progression will make your essay coherent and easy to read. College essay questions often suggest one or two main ideas or topics of focus. These can vary from personal to trivial, but all seek to challenge you and spark your creativity and insight. Students receive comprehensive notes and suggestions â" written directly on the document â" so the essay improves significantly with every draft. And, with College Essay Solutionsâ time-tested approach, it wonât be. We remain dedicated to serving you during these challenging times of COVID-19. Over the course of several drafts, we'll work with you to revise and perfect your essay until you've articulated your best self in a voice that's true to who you are. We can help you with your essay from initial brainstorm to final proofread and everything in between. This forces you to read each word individually and increases your chances of finding a typo. Reading aloud will also help you ensure your punctuation is correct, and itâs often easier to hear awkward sentences than see them. The last step is editing and proofreading your finished essay. Start with your main idea and follow it from beginning to end. Try to identify what the tone of your essay is going to be based on your ideas. This person can be a counselor, teacher, mentor, parent, or even a sibling who went through the process and has done a bunch of research since. Received my assignment before my deadline request, paper was well written. It took six years of tongue twisters and complicated mouth contortions in special education classes for me to produce the forty-four sounds of the English language. Itâs a chance to add depth to something that is important to you and tell the admissions committee more about your background or goals. Test scores only tell part of your story, and we want to know more than just how well you work. I was captivated by how confidently the debaters spoke and how easily they commanded attention. I was sick of how confining my quiet nature had become. For better or for worse, I decided to finally make my voice heard. I was born with a speech impediment that weakened my mouth muscles. I tried my best to blend in and give the impression I was silent by choice. I joined no clubs in primary school, instead preferring isolation.
